CHAPTER NINE

⸎ ⸎ ⸎ ⸎ ⸎

ZANDER BIT INTO the mini quiche and chewed thoughtfully. The crust was light and flakey, but the filling lacked flavor. If he were the baker, he’d swap out the cheese from Swiss to something with more of a punch. Maybe an aged sharp cheddar.

“What do you think?” Reese Danton asked as she twirled a lock of blonde hair around one finger. “You’re the chef in the family. I need your opinion.”

“I’m your future husband’s not-blood brother,” Zander said with a half-grin. “My opinion should be far down your list regarding wedding reception finger food.”

Reese shook her head and sat on one of the wicker-backed stools lining one side of the kitchen counter.

“I need to ask a question.”

Zander noticed that Reese’s typically sunny expression had darkened to a worried frown. He poured her a cup of coffee before adding a splash of cream. He handed her the drink.

“Careful,” he warned when Reese lifted the cup. “It’s hot.”

Reese sipped instead of gulping, but her smile of thank you only lasted a moment.

“What’s wrong?” Zander asked. “Did Bowie do something? The problem with your fiancé is that he’s a thinker. Trapped inside his head most of the day. Great for business. Not as much for a relationship.”

“Bowie’s fine. Great. The love of my life. The man of my dreams—literally.” Reese chuckled. “I’m rambling.”

“A little.” Zander crossed his arms and leaned against the marble countertop. “If you have a problem, you can tell me. I’m not the best listener, or so my brothers tell me. But for you, I’ll buckle down and concentrate.”

“How can I confide in you?” Reese raised her eyes. The distress in the blue depths was obvious. “You’re the problem, Zander.”

Zander searched his brain for what he’d done wrong. Reese moved into the house almost six months ago to be with Bowie. Surprisingly, the adjustment from living with all men to adding a woman to their mix went smoother than anticipated.

Reese was a bright, energetic person with an easy-to-like personality. She was a bit too bubbly for Zander’s taste. But for a sister, not a lover, he had no complaints.

Most important, Reese made Bowie happy—blissfully so. The couple fit like missing pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Some would say they completed each other—Zander wouldn’t. He’d choke before uttering such an overly saccharin phrase. But the sentiment was accurate.

Reese loved Bowie. She was his mate in every sense of the word. What more could any brother ask of his future sister-in-law?

“I’m stumped. Tell me what I did wrong. No promises that the bad habit will get fixed overnight. But I’ll do my best.”

“You aren’t the problem,” Reese insisted. “It’s me. Me, Dove, and Fiona.”

Zander’s brows lowered into a deep frown.

“I’m confused.”

“We’re worried that you might feel out of place,” Reese explained. “That we displaced you.”

Suddenly a light went off in Zander’s brain. He smiled.

“Be more specific,” he said. “You think I’m out of sorts because my brothers brought their women into our bachelor’s den.”

Reese looked relieved.

“I spent days trying to find the right words without success.
